Electronic dance music (EDM) has captivated audiences for decades with its deep beats and thrill-feel. While the genre is often associated with white artists like Avicii, Skrillex, and David Guetta— Black artists like Steve (Silk) Hurley, Crystal Waters, and CeCe Peniston have made monumental contributions to the EDM scene. House music, the Mother of all modern dance sub-genres, originated in Chicago’s underground clubs in the late 1970s, by Black and primarily gay DJs— most notably DJ Frankie Knuckles.
From its inception, Black creatives have shaped the very backbone of dance music, building inclusive underground club scenes and leading efforts for diversity in the industry.
In 2022, we got a glimpse of hearing Black dance/electronic music on the main stage when Beyoncé released her award-winning album RENAISSANCE, which was filled with disco & house flavors and was dedicated to her “Uncle Jonny” who was a gay Black man.
Today’s EDM landscape is constantly evolving, and Black artists are driving this innovation with fresh sounds and energy.
