In an exclusive sit-down with “The Morning Hustle”, former Georgia State Representative Erica Thomas shared her insights on the recent presidential debate and how things played out for Donald Trump. Known for her positive and non-divisive political approach, Thomas offered a candid, yet balanced, analysis of the night’s events and what it means for the 2024 race.
One of the main takeaways from Thomas’ reflection was her emphasis on sticking to real issues. “We want to talk about the issues, not crowd sizes,” she said, alluding to moments where Trump veered off course during the debate. She dismissed Trump’s attempts to draw attention away from the core topics, such as fracking, which she pointed out is critical to the American cost of living. “No one is eating cats and dogs,” she added, criticizing the exaggerated rhetoric used by Trump and his camp.

When it came to the debate moderators, Thomas shared her concerns, particularly about how it was managed. While she didn’t accuse the the host of bias, she did note that the decision to turn Trump’s mic back on—after both sides had agreed to strict rules—was an issue. As a result, Trump had an additional ten minutes of talk time, which Thomas felt gave him an unfair advantage. Despite this, she admired how his opponent managed to keep him off-balance. “It was easy to see how quickly Trump lost focus,” she commented with a smile.
Thomas also touched on the broader sentiment from the audience. “People wanted more substance from Trump,” she said. “It felt like he was still running against Joe Biden instead of his current opponent.” She strongly believes that Trump needs to agree to a second debate to give voters a clearer sense of his policy positions moving forward.
At one point, Trump even admitted defeat in the context of the debate, according to Thomas, when he stated that it felt like “three on one.” His comment suggested a feeling of being outnumbered, which Thomas interpreted as a subtle acknowledgment of the challenges he faced on stage.
The conversation finished off with a reminder from Thomas that the vice-presidential debate is set to take place on October 1st in New York City. Additionally, she noted that there appeared to be some disconnect between Trump and key ally JD Vance during the debate, signaling that even within his camp, there might be some divisions.
