AJ Griffin had spent years chasing his NBA dreams and perfecting his craft. But just as his NBA career was gaining momentum, the Atlanta Hawks’ former first-round pick had a shocking announcement: “I gave up basketball to follow Jesus.”
Now, if you ask your average basketball fan, they’d probably assume Griffin was gearing up for an epic comeback or perhaps ready to join the starting lineup again. After all, we’re talking about a man who was the 16th pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. But instead of donning his jersey, Griffin was hanging it up. “It seems like a loss in the world’s eyes,” he admitted with the same calm demeanor that once graced his post-game interviews. But this wasn’t about the world anymore—this was about heavenly goals, not just hoops. “I truly get to serve God with my full ‘yes,’” he declared.

The 21-year-old explained that his real MVP (Most Valuable Path) wasn’t the NBA but a call from above.
“This decision may seem crazy or abnormal to the world,” Griffin said. You could almost hear his inner coach blowing a whistle, calling for a timeout on life’s court. “But I’m not here to please man, only my Father in Heaven.” Turns out, his game plan wasn’t just about shooting hoops but shooting for something eternal.
It wasn’t an overnight decision. After a standout season at Duke, AJ Griffin said it all changed during the pandemic. “He found me,” Griffin shared, flashing the same smile that once greeted the spotlight after buzzer-beaters. But this time, he wasn’t talking about a college scout or a top draft pick. “I gave my life to Christ, and it was the best decision of my life, it truly was.”
With religion taking center court, Griffin discovered a new passion. “Basketball was the reason I was living,” he admitted, thinking back on a time when the sound of sneakers squeaking across the court was music to his ears. But it was a spiritual buzzer-beater that changed everything. His heart had started to change, and with that, the realization hit: the real victory wasn’t in scoring points but in serving God.
Some might say Griffin’s journey to ministry is like trading a fast break for a slower, more spiritual pace. But for AJ, it’s clear that while he may have traded basketball for the Bible, he’s still aiming for the win—this time, one with eternal rewards.
